Mercedes Transmission Repair & Rebuild Los Angeles Mercedes-Benz owners know that they drive one of the world’s premier cars. These automobiles are known for combining high-performance and luxury, while also exemplifying fine German engineering. They have maintained this standard of excellence in the auto industry through continual technological innovation. Mercedes has always led the field with its transmissions, especially its automatic transmission, which provides smooth shifting without sacrificing power. In 1978, Mercedes-Benz introduced a vacuum-controlled automatic transmission, which was standard on diesel-engine models. In 1996 a new wave of development began with the electronically-controlled automatic transmission. All Mercedes automatic transmissions have since been electronically controlled. A high-water mark was reached with the revolutionary automated manual transmission, which allows the driver to select the gear manually using paddles on the steering wheel, and without employing a clutch. One of the latest advances is the 7 speed automatic transmission. This transmission is now standard on the E-Class and M-Class, and is the choice of many new buyers of S-Class and C-Class models. But the price of such innovation is that there are growing pains along the way. Each new generation of transmissions brings its own set of problems. A broken transmission that owners have to rebuild or repair is the worst of it. Having to fix a Mercedes transmission costs money and can be a hassle. There are also some minor transmission problems to look out for and fix . Fixing these will prevent having to invest in a rebuilt transmission. Vacuum-controlled transmissions can frequently shift harshly from first to second, or flare in shifting from third to fourth. As they wear, these tendencies increase, typically after 15 years of use. The recent electronic transmissions have fewer mechanical problems, but do experience difficulties with several of the electronic components. Sometimes there are software errors that need reprogramming in order to function properly. Some of the recent 7 speed transmissions have problems. For instance, they lock in a low gear and won’t get out, or sometimes simply delay in shifting from first to second. Others slip between gears. Sometimes they have problems at low speed and low RPM, “clunking” into a lower gear. In very few of these cases does the entire transmission need to be rebuilt. The problem can be traced to a modulator, an amplifier, or a valve problem, and resolved without radical overhaul. However, choosing not to repair small transmission problems often leads to bigger ones. Although these problems are unique to Mercedes-Benz, there are also general
problems that can be easily solved. Sometimes the Mercedes might require
nothing more than some new transmission fluid or a new transmission filter,
sometimes it might require a simple adjustment. |
