Road Trip Games for Your Children

Road trips with your kids don't have to be stressful and fueled with a case of the dreaded, "Are we there yets?" There are many opportunities to make time in the automobile fun for both parents and children. Here are some games that the whole family can enjoy the next time you're on the road.

  1. Twenty Questions: Children who are 4 years old and older will love this classic game. One person in the car secretly comes up with a vegetable, animal, or mineral. Everyone else then takes turns asking yes-or-no questions, such as "Is it furry?" or "Does it grow on trees?" After everyone in the game has asked 20 questions, each person makes a guess.

  2. The Alphabet Game: This is a fun game for kids 5 and older. One person picks the left-hand side of the road, and another person chooses the left. Every person in the car looks for letters of the alphabet that are seen on license plates and signs. The goal of the Alphabet Game is to point out all the letters of the alphabet in order, from A to Z. The winner is the first person to spot all the letters.

  3. The Animal Name Game: This fun game works best for children who are 6 and up. One person in the car picks an animal. Then each individual in the car names another animal that begins with the last letter of the previous animal mentioned. This is a game with no winner or loser. If children are older, you can do this game with geographical categories like countries, states, and cities.

  4. Telephone: This is the ideal game to play if your children are at least 4 years old. One of the kids will whisper the story to another person in the car. That person then whispers the story to someone else as specifically as possible. This continues until everyone has been whispered the story from the last person who heard it. The last person who was told the story then repeats it out loud. The final story is usually  a garbled version of the original which will inevitably lead to some laughs.

  5. The Theme Song Game: A person in the car hums a theme song to a TV show or movie and the first person who guesses the right song hums the next one. It's pretty simple and great way to bring the good music vibe into the car.
